Is known for crafting elegant, timeless spaces that meld form and function

“I’ve always had a love for creating and building spaces,” says architect Edmund Ng. “This affinity for shaping environments began when I was young and continues to the present day.”

The architect has fond childhood memories of constructing makebelieve play areas with his sisters, using cardboard boxes and other everyday materials the siblings could find, with Ng constantly redecorating their rooms to improve the family home. His passion for spatial design led to

Ng’s current vocation, working as both an architect and an interior designer to realise beautiful spaces for his clients.

Since the founding of his eponymous firm in 2005, Ng has crafted elegant projects that embody the modernist ethos that “form follows function”, a philosophy championed by American architects Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Sullivan, whom he deeply admires.

Ng’s understated approach is evident in each project his company takes on. Combining pure geometry with a studied treatment of natural light, the firm creates immersive spaces inside and out. Under Ng’s practiced eye, monochromatic spaces are anything but boring; much care is given to the material palette to create tactile layers within the space while being mindful of the unique requirements of each project.

“Much like the guiding principles that a painter might apply to an artwork, I believe that a design should be contextual, such that it ref lects our current

Founded by Edmund Ng, the studio specialises in architecture and interior design projects in Singapore and beyond. The firm also participated in the Venice Architecture Biennale 2014 in Italy and designed a marine-themed exhibition, Ghost Nets of the Ocean: Au Karem ira Lamar Lu, held at the Asian Civilisations Museum in 2017.

Residential and hospitality projects by the firm include the f lagship of Kwanpen at Marina Bay Sands, luxury condominium One Rosyth, the Montigo Resorts Nongsa in Batam, Indonesia as well as beautiful homes and showf lats in Singapore.

In the past 15 years, the firm has steadily expanded its footprint abroad with a variety of projects in Switzerland and Israel as well as various cities in Asia. The team is currently in the process of designing resorts amid the Himalayan mountain range in Nepal, several new projects in Bhutan as well as a community library in Cambodia; the latter, in particular, is a project that Ng considers his greatest personal achievement.

“I wanted to help in some way, to use architecture as a means to empower people living in rural environments in Cambodia,” shares Ng, on the pro bono initiative. “I chose to build a library as I believe that knowledge is a powerful way to circumvent poverty and can give people hope for a better future.”

Guided by his passion for architecture and design, Ng hopes to bring his firm to greater heights while creating memorable spaces for his clients. “I always feel blessed that this profession has never felt like ‘just work’ to me, as the process of envisioning and building spaces constantly stimulates my mind and provides me with endless enjoyment,” he says with pride.
