“‘Hope is the thing with feathers / That perches in the soul / And sings the tune without the words /
And never stops at all.” Comparing hope to a bird that never stops singing, these words penned by American poet Emily Dickinson reference the empowering effects of optimism, even in the toughest of times.
To capture the rays of hope and positivity shining through, Pantone has paired a sunny yellow called Illuminating with the understated Ultimate Gray as the joint Colours of the Year 2021. With that in mind, we showcase the uplifting effects of these sprightly shades, shortlisting collections inspired by the colour combination (page 34) and featuring vibrant bedrooms that illustrate the cheerful impact of bright hues (page 46).
The importance of home improvement soared in 2020, and we expect many of you to undertake decoration projects this year as well. Before you begin, peruse our extensive trend report outlining the styles to watch (page 56). Apart from making your abode a comfortable space, imbue it with an artistic f lourish by installing sculptures; we ask gallerists to share ideas on how you can begin your very own three-dimensional art collection on page 42.
