Perfumer Camille Goutal celebrates the twenty-something woman with a new romantic fragrance
he’s young, charming, mysterious… and she dearly loves to laugh. This lively lady is the vision behind Rose Pompon, the latest fragrance by Annick Goutal. The iconic ribbed bottle, now adorned with shades of soft pink lacquering, houses a rose-centric scent with spicy notes of pink pepper and blackcurrant with velvety raspberry. At its heart, a duo of roses. Rose pompon, aka the garden Centifolia rose, is matched with Taif rose for a fresh and fruity, yet sensual bouquet that lingers. We speak to perfumer Camille Goutal, daughter of Annick, about what her 20s were like and her own joie de vivre that inspired the Rose Pompon.
When you take a whiff of this perfume, what do you think of?
I’m reminded of the Parisian girl on the street who is trendy and dynamic. She’s pretty, but she doesn’t know it. She doesn’t care. Most of all, I think of my city. Work is hard for everyone in Paris but we do it in such a beautiful environment. We’re very lucky.
What were you like in your 20s?
Oh, I was very rebellious! Everything a teenager can do and was told not to do, I did. I did graffiti and other stupid things I would never do again but it was lots of fun. All experiences were new then. My energy came from and still comes from discovering new things.
Did you travel?
All the time. Songes is the fragrance I created for myself after a trip to Mauritius when I was 25. It’s the smell of frangipani at sunset. It took me five years to develop it. It was so important for me to get it just right. Every time I smell it now, I think about that other side of the world.
It sounds like a remarkable time.
It wasn’t always. My mother was ill for a long time, so happiness is something we cherish. Success is cool but what really matters is to be happy. My main goal is to be able to put that emotion in a bottle.
