SINGAPORE TATLER BALL

There was something different about the crowd who graced the Singapore Tatler 34th Anniversar­y Ball in October at Shangri-la Hotel, Singapore’s Island Ballroom. Joining the old guards of high society this year was a decidedly younger set who had proved, by their own merit and virtue, that they, too, were a pertinent presence in an exclusive celebratio­n as such. Both seasoned guests and first-time ball attendees didn’t hold back on dressing to the theme of The Lady and Her Professor, which was inspired by the Audrey Hepburn classic My Fair Lady. The invitation cards that were sent out featured key design elements from the film such as the blackand-white stripes referencin­g the dress Eliza Doolittle wore to the Royal Ascot, and the silhouette of a chandelier. Of the night’s theme, Edipresse Media Singapore managing director Corinne Ng said: “We thought about colours, concepts, social trends... and then one idea led to another and before we knew it, we were drawing parallels between the movie My Fair Lady and what we were doing with literacy. This year, Edipresse Media Singapore has adopted a cause, which is to help increase English literacy among vulnerable children and youth in Singapore. Besides the intellectu­al alignment between the film and the cause, there was the glamorous set costumes to take inspiratio­n from!” Society darlings took their cues from the film classic and made those sartorial tropes modern with classic necklines, elbow-length gloves, elaborate headpieces and more diamonds than could be counted.
