Usher in the Year of the Fire Rooster with a rousing line-up of performanc­es by local and internatio­nal artistes at the Huayi – Chinese Festival of Arts

e last saw anthony wong in the Cantonese adaptation of French playwright Yasmina Reza’s God of Carnage by his company Dionysus Contempora­ry Theatre at the Huayi – Chinese Festival of Arts last year. The Hong Kong thespian returns to headline the festival once again this year with William Shakespear­e’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, starring opposite veteran actress Candice Yu. The 15th edition of the festival organised by the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay takes place from February 3 to 12 and features an exciting line-up of theatre, dance, music, visual arts, and more. Also returning to Singapore is acclaimed Taiwanese play Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land, first staged 10 years ago for Huayi 2007, about two theatre groups that are mistakenly booked into the same rehearsal space. Making its festival debut is The Necessary Stage with Actor, Forty by director Alvin Tan and playwright Haresh Sharma. The new original monologue features Golden Horse Award-winner Yeo Yann Yann and examines the identities that we take on and cast off in life. Also making its Singapore debut is Cloud Gate 2, the sister company of Taiwanese contempora­ry dance group Cloud Gate, bringing three riveting works by choreograp­hers Cheng Tsung-lung and Huang Yi. Mandopop fans, you don’t want to miss Taiwanese pop star Yoga Lin who performs songs from his latest album Sell Like Hot Cakes. The Singapore Chinese Orchestra, under the baton of Tsung Yeh, together with Cantonese singer Johnny Yip, takes you back to the world of wuxia films and television series, while Mongolian band Haya pays tribute to the musical heritage of Mongolia, featuring a blend of modern music. esplanade.com/huayi
