The Joy of Life

-

The newest fragrance from Dior is the embodiment of joie de vivre, discovers Elizabeth Lee

It is the colour of a gorgeous rising sun. The deep, burnished shade of your precious amber heirloom jewellery. A hint at your favourite shot of whiskey. If looking at the pretty bottle sitting on your dresser evokes all these memories, and more, then Dior perfumer François Demachy has been successful in bringing the essence of his latest creation to life. Like a declaration for all things lively, fun and beautiful, the new scent has been aptly named J’adore In Joy. Reinvented with unique notes like fleur de sel and ylang-ylang essence, the peachy liquid gold is an ode to living life to the fullest.

THE IDEAL BLOOM

The J’adore range of perfumes has been around just shy of two decades, and has seen plenty of iterations such as J’adore L’absolu and J’adore L’OR since. Like its predecessors, J’adore In Joy contains the signature ylang-ylang note that those familiar with the scent would immediately know and recognise. However, instead of the usual floral notes—think magnolia, rose and even warm vanilla— salty and fruity accords have been added to this version to tease the senses.

FINDING JOY

First, a trio of legendary flowers—jasmine sambac, neroli and tuberose—were used to create the fleur de sel or flower of salt, a thin, delicate layer of salt “crust” left on the surface of seawater when the water evaporates. “With J’adore In Joy, I created an original fruity-salty accord to make the white flowers shine. This fleur de sel is modern in style and literally smells of joy,” says Demachy. Next, ylang-ylang, also known as the “flower of flowers”, was sourced from Nosy y Be,, a tiny island off the coastcoas of Madagascar, and takenta back to Grasse, thet French cradle of perfumery, where Demachy worked with chemists to distil a concentrated ylang hearthe essence. “The“reason I wanted this specificspe ylang essence from the island of Nosy Be is that it possesses notes that are very close to the flower as well as a salty note. It therefore resonates perfectly with the composition of J’adore In Joy, which itself is built on an incisive salty accord,” he shares. Juicy peach at the base brightens, refreshes and uplifts the entire creation. The result? A fun, fresh scent that wears its heritage well, charming new fans with its daring take on a well-loved classic.
