Tiffany & Co’s latest horological offering to women is one for all seasons, writes Terence Lim

ince the 19th century, Tiffany & Co has been the go-to jeweller for women (and men) who are looking for some sparkle. With its understanding of and access to the world’s most beautiful stones, its incredible jewellery-making savoir faire and its design-centric aesthetic, it is no wonder that Tiffany & Co seeks to inject this rich legacy into everything it touches. The latest example is the new Tiffany Metro watch, which melds Swiss watchmaking capabilities with its jewellery craftsmanship. “Tiffany & Co has been a destination for rare and dazzling diamonds since 1848 when founder Charles Lewis Tiffany purchased important gemstones from European aristocrats and royalty. We incorporated this legacy into the design of the Tiffany Metro to show the evolution of this iconic heritage,” said Nicola Andreatta, vice president and general manager of the brand’s watch division. Like its name suggests, the watch has a contemporary and urbane design. The dial of the 34mm version boasts breathing space and is uncluttered, save for a simple seconds subdial at 6 o’clock. Each watch comes with a round, serialised diamond on its crown. This is a simple but significant touch because it links the watch back to Tiffany & Co’s jewellery-making roots instantly. Moreover, since each diamond is serialised, no two watches are the same, making each piece more personal to the wearer. Besides the serialised diamond on the crown, another interesting aspect of the Metro is the asymmetry of the case and bracelet. Both components take references from the past. The case resembles that of a Patek Philippe Tiffany pocket watch from the 19th century, while the curvilinear motif of the Tiffany Metro bracelet is reminiscent of the vintage bejewelled bracelets from the brand’s esteemed Blue Book collection. Of course, the dynamic design of the watch is also a reference to the pace and energy of New York—a city synonymous to the jeweller. “The Tiffany Metro watch reinterprets our past to reflect an elegant and unique timepiece for the modern woman. The streamlined diamond design and array of style options make it perfect for wearing day or night,” added Andreatta. To make the watch more wearable and appealing to the modern woman, Tiffany & Co has rolled out several colourways and interpretations. This approach in positioning the watch more as a fashion accessory than a time-telling device will make it appealing to modern women, who appreciate such versatility. The watch comes in stainless steel or rose gold with some versions more bejewelled than the rest. Our personal favourites though? Two pieces: one with a pastel blue dial and dark blue leather strap, and the other with a burgundy dial with matching leather strap.
