Tatler Singapore

An Open Letter

-

’m writing to you future Generation T listers way in advance. One year ahead, in fact, because it really does take a full 365 days to impress us here at Singapore Tatler. To be included in the Gen.t list, it’s not just about doing consistently good work in your field, as Singapore is truly brimming with such talents. It’s really about you shining bright in your discipline, and achieving your goals with heart, passion and gumption, surpassing all expectations along the way. Whether you excel in anthropology or zoology, if you are a trailblazer, a game changer or one making a difference in the world today, you deserve to be part of our Gen.t community. Our selection process is rigorous. The entire team, from senior management to junior writers, will send out feelers to source for names. We also harness the network of the Tatler Tribe heavyweights, who recommend the trailblazers in their respective industries. We want to include those who’ve punched above their weight and made an impact in society in the last year. For the Generation T List 2018, we collated some 180 names, which we then whittled down to 50 people. In fact, you’d be surprised at some of the familiar names we’ve omitted this year. That’s not because they’re not worthy, but as I’ve mentioned earlier, we look for people who’ve had an outstanding year, not just a decent one. You may also not recognise some of the names on this year’s list, but this is the premise of Gen.t—we only feature those who are making waves. Follow the lead of the three young faces on the cover of this issue of Singapore Tatler. Just 25 years old, Annabelle Kwok is the founder of an artificial intelligence (AI) consultancy that develops Ai-centric solutions for better work productivity. A fearsome fighter in the mixed martial arts ring, 21-year-old Angela Lee tackles challenges head-on, and believes in having no regrets. Meanwhile, Ho Jia Jian, a 30-year-old engineer by training, has created a platform to promote the talents of Southeast Asian film-makers, making truly Asian stories resonate with the world. The year 2017 was special for them, as they scored achievement after achievement. Their admirable attitude, persistence and determination have seen them blaze a trail. Of course, they aren’t the only ones. Don’t forget the 47 other outstanding individuals in this year’s Gen.t list —all champions in their own right. If you think you fit the criteria and want to meet like-minded people and be part of the Gen.t community, I implore you to put your blood, sweat and tears into what you are doing. Do it with your heart and do it without fear. After all, “status quo” is not common parlance with Gen.t listers. “Breaking boundaries” is.
