James Robbins, general manager, Flok
A passion for landscape photography led James Robbins, general manager of boutique digital marketing agency Flok, to pick up drone photography. He had been using Nikon DSLRs for the past 10 years and had begun to tire of lugging photography equipment like lenses, tripods and filters during his travels. So he jumped at the opportunity to try out drone photography when he found a model that could be folded compactly, making it easy to transport.
“Getting a drone has reignited that passion, and has motivated me to make time for it as the rewards are just amazing,” says the 40-year-old of the “unlimited and new perspectives” he has discovered.
“The opportunities are limitless, as you can now position the camera exactly where you want. This opens up an entirely new creative opportunity and challenge. Things you can’t see from ground level suddenly reveal themselves. Buildings take on a whole new form from above.”
Robbins, who received his DJI Mavic Pro in time for a Christmas and New Year’s family visit to Switzerland last year, adds: “You really couldn’t ask for a better place to go. The scenery is just stunning and vast, and having a drone really helps you appreciate and capture the scale and beauty. You really do feel spoilt when you’re editing the pictures after.”
Up next for him is navigating the learning curve in using the drone for videos. “You can capture so much more of an experience with video but it’s really hard to fly [it] and capture interesting images at the same time.”
