HINTERLAND VLEISHANDELAAR

-

BEST FOR Those who love meat and wine. FOOD This is a good, honest South African steakhouse with a modern twist. There’s an onion ring starter stuffed with beef mince and mozzarella cheese, and the melt-in-your-mouth lamb roast comes with a very flavoursome orange-and-thyme sauce. The steaks, of course, are the heroes, cooked to perfection and tasty and tender. The Béarnaise sauce is popular. Other mains include seared salmon, beef stroganoff and lamb curry. The dessert menu is pretty sparse, but the crème brûlée is delicious. DRINKS A fine selection of wines, mainly from Rust en Vrede, Guardian’s Peak, Stellenbosch Reserve and Donkiesbaai estates. SERVICE Excellent and attentive. AMBIENCE Earthy leather and wood. A wall of wine bottles separates the butchery from the dining area. (GF)
