MBOMBELA - Kelly van de Merwe (28), manager of Picasso’s Mexican Taqueria in White River, is home after she was seriously injured in a vehicle accident on Wednesday September 22.

Van de Merwe was discharged from hospital on Saturday October 2.

Jaco Bruwer, her fiancé, said that

Van de Merwe is on the road to recovery, even though she still needed a lot of medical care.

Van de Merwe recently published an update about her recovery on her Facebook page.

“After hearing the severity of my injuries, I had a very grim outlook regarding my future. I lost all my dignity and every single day brings on a new battle. The pain and exhaustion can sometimes be unbearable. Even the simplest of things feel like an enormous task.”

She wrote that she was extremely blessed with the support system she had to get her through the situation.

“I choose to keep moving forward and take this one day at a time. Words fall short when I try to express my sincerest gratitude to everyone who has helped me over the past couple of days.”

Shortly after the accident, Van de Merwe’s family started a GoGetFunding page to raise funds for her medical bills as she did not have a medical aid. By Wednesday October 6, more than

R160 000 had already been raised.

Van de Merwe thanked people for the donations, prayers, love and messages they had sent.

“I still have a long road to recovery and the medical bills are still piling in. Please continue to share my story. Every little bit helps,” she wrote.

According to a recent update on the GoGetFunding page, Van de Merwe was still in a lot of pain, but was improving with physiotherapy.

“The process of learning to walk again is going to take some time and we are praying for the exoskeleton to be removed in approximately six weeks,” read the update.

Van de Merwe sustained several injuries in the accident, including a broken pelvis and nose and a burst bladder. Van de Merwe was in the vehicle with Bruwer on their way home from Pine Lake when it left the road and hit a tree.
