Tariffs for nature reserves remain largely unchanged
MBOMBELA - The yearly increase in tariffs at nature reserves in Mpumalanga will leave most entrance fees unchanged in order to cater for the domestic market.
The MTPA recently announced that the reviewed tariffs would remain largely the same and would be implemented from November 1.
“This is to cater for the domestic market and to respond to the economic challenges faced by the tourism industry due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic,” read a recent statement by the MTPA.
Some adjustments have been made, however. There will be no increase on the price for current accommodation, except for a minimal increase for some of the chalets at Manyeleti Nature Reserve from R740 to R795.
“There will be a nominal increase of entrance fees at God’s Window from R20 to
R25 for locals, and this will be adjusted accordingly for SADC and international visitors,” said Johannes Nobunga, the CEO of the MTPA.
The tariff to gain entrance to the Three Rondavels will remain unchanged at R35 for locals, but a tariff fee of R100 per person will be implemented for camping instead of the amount of R350 that was previously charged per campsite.
Thanks to newly built infrastructure at Mahushe Shongwe Nature Reserve, the conservation levy will see an increase of R5, from R40 to R45 per adult and from
R20 to R25 per child. The same increase will apply for SADC visitors. Some of the new infrastructure includes swimming pools, a picnic area with braai stands, communal ablution and an upgraded conference centre.
“As part of enhancing the product portfolio, the MTPA will continue to introduce new tourism activities for specific nature reserves such as a bush braai service and guided bush walk.
“This will go a long way to attract the domestic market as well as providing more choices to enhance visitor experience,” said the MTPA.
Nobunga said the agency is governed by the MTPA Act of 2005, which obliges it to progressively generate its own revenue collection.
“It is therefore important to note that the income in general will be used for continuous upgrading of infrastructure at our nature reserves and to further provide visitors with the best possible experience and value for money.”
