Businesswomen empower one another to be the best
MBOMBELA - The South African
Council for Business Women (SACBW) recently held its monthly networking sessions at the Kingfisher's Country Kitchen and Traditional Smokehouse.
The SACBW is an organisation that empowers emerging and successful businesswomen to own their authentic power and combine their collective strengths in order to evolve and grow with the everchanging business landscape.
There were three speakers at the September event, and two women won prizes.
The speakers were Estelle Roe of Junxion Communications, Deléne de Lange of Design by D and Tracy-Erin Duggan of Stegmanns Incorporated and the SACBW's local business leader.
Roe spoke about the importance of giving back to the community that supports one’s business. “As a business owner, one needs to share with the community. The public will get to see that you do not only take, but make an impact.”
De Lange focused on a company’s branding. “When designing a logo and colours, one needs to think carefully about this. Each colour has a meaning. It is important to do research before choosing a colour for your business. For example, the colours pink and red are linked to love.”
Duggan shared various issues related to the law, including the importance of having a good attorney and how laws can derail a business. “Instead of trying to figure out the law, you should be focusing on your daily business while your attorney focuses on it. There are several things you need to educate your employees about; things such as social media policies and IT policies. Employees need to know that they cannot post anything they want on social media and that they cannot open every attachment they receive via email.”
Carol Nake received the Ambassador Award for Mpumalanga and Thea Rix the Community Warrior of the Year Award from the council.
The council gives various awards every year to appreciate and honour women who make an impact in their communities.
Nake is the chairperson of Women in Tourism and the owner of Tinyiko Kruger Lodge located in Marloth Park.
Rix is known as the person behind the Facebook group, Mbombela Electricity, Water Roads and Service Delivery Information, where she shares information about the city and surrounding areas’ service delivery. The group has over 20 000 members.
Duggan said, “Nake’s entry will be entered into the second leg of the competition with the other ambassadors from the other provinces, and the businesswoman of the year will be awarded on October 22.”
