Riverside succesfully hosts breast cancer awareness drive
It made such an essential examination available and accessible to members of the public who may not otherwise have had the funds to have it done
Cancer affects one in four South Africans, through diagnosis of family, friends, colleagues, or self, so Riverside City Improvement District (CID) undertook an initiative this October in honour of breast cancer awareness to make a meaningful difference. The team facilitated that CANSA’s mobile clinic be stationed at the popular
The Grove Shopping Centre from October 5 to 7. The mobile clinic’s professional nurse performed clinical breast examinations on 77 women who took the opportunity to register. The test was free of charge to the public, with the aim of encouraging women to have the examination done.
The event was a first of its kind for the Riverside CID and was a success. It made such an essential and important examination available and accessible to members of the public who may not otherwise have had the funds to have it done. Cancer is one of the major killers throughout both the developed and developing world. Early detection is fundamental to receive treatment, which is very important in overcoming any kind of cancer.
“We feel that women always prioritise many other things over their health, and that if we could do something that may save their life, then we should do it,” said Jessica Prim, marketing coordinator for the precinct. Riverside CID values the community and endeavours to continue to host events that have a positive impact, because it believes that at the heart of the CID are the members of the community who visit and operate in the precinct. The team has already started planning for next year and plans to incorporate a similar event for men. A special thank you to CANSA Lowveld for partnering with the Riverside CID in making this possible.
