MBOMBELA - President Cyril Ramaphosa has cautioned all ANC councillor candidates against corruption or any form of wrong-doing that may bring the organisation into disrepute.

Ramaphosa was addressing councillor candidates from all nine provinces on Tuesday night during a virtual conference from Johannesburg.

He was at Nelspruit Rugby Club to meet and greet Mpumalanga's candidates at 16:00, after visiting Nkomazi earlier in the day.

Thereafter he flew to

Johannesburg to chair the national virtual meeting.

About 1 000 Mpumalanga ANC councillor candidates remained at Nelspruit Rugby Club to take part in this inaugural "roll call event", a brainchild of Ramaphosa in which he aims to get the ANC’s candidates to toe the line.

The candidates from all nine provinces signed a pledge, committing themselves to serve with integrity and diligence.

“The time for our councillors to be arrogant is over. We need to have councillors who will always put the people and our communities first,” said Ramaphosa.

“Candidates have made this pledge as part of the ANC’s commitment to do better and be better. They have just pledged to correct what has gone wrong and to fix our mistakes. There are also areas where we have done well, but we have also said that we are going to do better because we are the

ANC.

"We have confronted corruption and state capture. We have rebuilt public institutions and started to revitalise state-owned enterprises. We have undertaken mass public employment programmes and driven far-reaching reforms. We have demonstrated that we will not stand for wrongdoing, no matter who is involved.

"We will not protect any ANC leader, public representative or member who faces allegations of corruption or other serious offences. The law must take its course,” he continued.

In Mpumalanga, the councillor candidates were led by the party’s acting chairperson, Mandla Ndlovu and acting secretary, Lindiwe Ntshalintshali.

Ramaphosa warned the candidates that they would be kicked out if they continued with the bad practices, including corruption.
