Schools’ track and field season in full swing
Primary and high schools in the Lowveld have hit the track (and field) running in preparation for the annual Interprimary and Interhigh athletics meetings.
The 2024 Goldwagen Lowveld Interprimary will be hosted by Laerskool Nelspruit at Hoërskool Nelspruit on
February 17, and the BUCO Lowveld Interhigh will be held at Hoërskool
Barberton on Saturday February 24.

Athletics meeting last Thursday.
Nkateko Mbombi was the junior victor ludorum and Joané Jansen the junior victrix ludorum. The senior victor ludorum honour went to Justice James and the senior victrix ludorum trophy to Annie Bester.
One of the finest performances of the day came from Ncendo Mlambo, who set a new record of 22.8 seconds in the girls’ 150m sprint.
Laerskool Lydenburg held its 2024 Interhouse last Thursday and Friday.
The Ribbokke won the athletics trophy, while the Bosbokke claimed the spirit trophy.
Barberton Primary School held its Interhouse athletics meeting on Friday, and it was all about who was having the most fun.
Although the pupils competed in three teams, blue, red and yellow, no scores were kept, as the main aim of the meet was to select the athletes who will represent the school for the rest of this athletics season.
Hoërskool Rob Ferreira is in overdrive in preparation for the annual BUCO Lowveld Interhigh, and held its Interhouse last Thursday and Friday.
Lauzanne Rabe claimed first place in the girls’ U19 long jump with a leap of 5.8m, earning her 780 ASA points - the best performance of the meet.
Tumisho Mokoena will be one to watch at the Interhigh. He won the boys’ U15 shotput with an effort of 13.6m.
A thrilling spectacle of top-class athletics played out at Hoërskool Bergvlam’s Interhouse meet on Saturday.
The Blue and Red teams fought it out to the end. The Blues just pipped the Reds to the post, 1 275 points to 1 258.
The best performance by a girl came from Naledi Shabangu, who claimed gold with 9.97m in the U15 shotput, earning her
756 ASA points.
Njalo Mabuza was the best boy athlete. He clocked 11.01 seconds in the U19 100m.
The track and field athletes of Hoërskool Lydenburg were in action at the annual Interhouse on Saturday.
The Trichards were in fine form and won the athletics trophy. The spirit cup went to the Potgieters.
Penryn College might be the smallest school (by number of pupils) at the annual Interhigh, but their athletes are always exceptionally well prepared and extremely determined, and they will no doubt once again shine come February 24. The school held its Interhouse on Saturday. House Kestrel won the spirit trophy as well as the athletics trophy for the day.
