MBOMBELA - National Pet Day was celebrated on April 11.

Lowvelder recently held an online social media competition for which Facebook followers were asked to publish a cute video or photo of their beloved pets - all for sharing in the fun on National Pet Day.

After numerous conversations and contemplation, the difficult decision was made. These two winners are the cutest, fluffiest and most lovable.

Oscar is a two-year-old cat who lives in Mbombela. His owner, Lizanne van Kasterop-Roos, says that at about 10 days old, he fell from the roof of a workshop in Secunda. Her husband and son were working there and brought the kitten home so that Lizanne could care for him. Upon inspection, a local veterinarian said that Oscar’s chances of survival were about 10%. With the love and care of the Roos family and their Labrador, Charlie, he survived.

“He stole our hearts from the first day,” says Lizanne. Being one of six rescue cats in the Roos household, he is definitely different, always on his own mission, playing with sticks and insects. Oscar, who as result of the fall walks like a ballerina and is crosseyed, is described by the family as their special kitten.

Rigter and his brother, Ruyter, owned by Charlotte van Rensburg, were the winners in the dog section. Ruyter is the sweetest dog and an older brother to Rigter. At the time of going to press, the paper could not get hold of his owners for their comment.

Lowvelder visited the SPCA in Mbombela on Monday and delivered 20kg dog food and 10kg cat food, compliments of the sponsor, Montana Garden Pavilion. The food shelves at the SPCA Nelspruit are almost empty, and the organisation requires urgent assistance. It entreated the public for donations, stating that its food bill is extremely high, and without the communities’ assistance, it cannot continue with its work. Community members who wish to assist can donate food or funds, as this will enable the SPCA to reach those animals in need. They specifically request assistance with wet and dry food for small and large breeds of dogs, puppies, adult cats and kittens. Donations can be delivered to the SPCA Nelspruit at 6 Meidlinger Street, or contact the centre on 013 753 3582.
