Specialized Airnet

-

Specialized’s new mid-range Airnet helmet may share aesthetic elements with the iconic hairnet-style helmets worn by riders of the 70s and 80s – but it’s built with the modern rider in mind. Priced at R1 999, and with a host of features you’d expect from more expensive models, the Airnet represents great value for money.

BANG FOR YOUR BUCK

Sharing the same Mindset fit system as Specialized’s range-topping Prevail helmet, the Airnet makes it easy to find a comfortable fit on the head. Cushioning is provided by five Merino-wool pads, which reduce odour-causing bacteria.

Over the test period the pads provided ample comfort, and didn’t suffer any significant wear. The chinstraps are a slight disappointment, in that the Y-junctions aren’t adjustable. Both Y-junctions are positioned slightly lower than we’d prefer, but it’s not the end of the world.

Each helmet is supplied with an additional removable ‘soft’ visor (replacing the pad on the helmet’s brow), which – over and above looking cool – helped shield us from sun, rain and rear-wheel spray.

ITS GOT GRIP

Something that caught eye was the Airnet’s front and rear vent grippers, which secure your favourite sunnies to the helmet without a hint of rattling. Surprisingly – despite the added value offered by this simple storage solution – it’s often overlooked by helmet designers, and is a welcome feature on the Airnet.

COOL AT ANY SPEED

The Airnet’s streamlined shell lends itself to aerodynamic efficiency, with Specialized saying that in fact, it’s faster

The Airnet offers great value for money Weight: 260g (size small) Front and rear vent grippers store eyewear quickly and easily – usually reserved for high- end models The chin straps are non-adjustable at the Y-junction, which could make the fit sub- optimal than the company’s Prevail helmet.

Ventilation is another strong point. Three gaping rear vents allow hot air to escape at any riding speed – even up Du Toitskloof Pass in the glaring afternoon sun during the Tour de Good Hope. Last but not least: the Airnet is a goodlooking helmet, and can also be ridden on bikes not made by Specialized!
