Malan bought his Wolverine as a frameset, and has cleverly built his up with practical parts that promote versatility. Front and rear pannier racks are by SOMA and Tubus respectively.

A 440mm SOMA Highway1 handlebar has a short reach with shallow drops, for a not- too- racy position. A beautiful- sounding Japanese- made Crane E- ne bell perfectly complements a pair of Nitto fillet- brazed stainless steel bottle cages. Pedals are Shimano XT with one-sided SPD entry – coupled with a platform, for normal shoes.

Bicycling’s favourite item is Malan’s tubby bag, made from an old Woolies Breakfast Blend coffee bag that perfectly (and intentionally!) matches the frame’s orange colour.
