Bicycling (South Africa)

WHOSE PACE IS IT ANYWAY?

-

Put two people together on a bike each, and it invariably becomes some form of measuring competition. So it’s best to have the conversation before you start – no-drop rules, regroup at the top of the climbs, everyone stay within earshot of Bruce, whatever keeps the majority of the group happy – and then stick to it.

This is important for beginners, who may not have the fitness or skills to stay with the group; with some encouragement, they will learn fast. But it’s also a safety concern; this is not a country for getting left behind on your own in a strange neighbourhood.

Communication is key – if you are getting dropped, speak up. There’s no shame in it, and you’ll always find someone else who’s also in trouble and is happy to use your moment to back off themselves.
