THE NEW PYGA MOBU

Against the backdrop of the coronavirus and what it’s done to pro cycling – to all sport – the announcement of the new Pyga Mobu was like a sunbeam sent from heaven to cheer us all up.

Although the bike will only be launched officially later in the year, one of our best local riders – Matthys Beukes from Team Pyga Euro Steel – has been testing a prototype; and it looks seriously cool.

The Mobu is an improvement on the popular Stage, and the same frame can be built either for marathon racing, with 120/118mm of suspension travel, or for trail riding, with 130/135mm of travel.

Even more exciting is that the carbon frames will be made right here in South Africa. Yes, you read that right! Patrick Morewood from Pyga has partnered with Gauteng-based Blackstone Tek, who are world leaders in the production of high-performance carbon wheels and components for motorcycle brands such as Ducati, MV Agusta and Arch, and supercar makers Vuhl and Ariel. This follows hot on the heels of Pyga bringing their alloy manufacturing home – their gravity-focused Hyrax and Slakline are both made locally, in Howick, KZN.

The first 50 frames have already been pre-sold and are due for delivery as soon as the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions allow for manufacturing to continue. But even once production is in full swing, the Mobu will remain an extremely high-quality, small-batch frame sold on a made-to-order basis. The price of the production Mobu hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it’s safe to say that you should start saving immediately. – Jon Minster
