SA shows its spirit
CONTEST Team SA has successfully defended its International Spirit of Amarok Trophy. The 2016 competition took place north of Upington in the Kalahari Desert. Fourteen teams from Australia, Botswana, Namibia, Russia and SA participated with each country except Russia being represented by three teams, each team comprising of two people. The teams contested 30 stages over five days in VW Amaroks. Team SA were followed by Team Namibia, Team Australia, Team Botswana and Team Russia.
New Kyalami track certified
UPGRADE The new 4.522km Kyalami Grand Prix circuit has been certified by the Federation International de l’Automobile (FIA) as a Grade 2 racetrack, conforming to international safety and quality standards. Kyalami is the only current motor racing facility in Africa to have been bestowed with such accreditation. In his track report, FIA safety delegate Charlie Whiting said: “The track looked amazing and the attention to detail during the total refurbishment is second to none.”
Volvo announces pricing
NEW RANGE Pricing for the new Volvo S90 executive sedan will start at R675,200, rising to R871,900 for the flagship model. The new S90 range includes 12 derivatives, spanning three trim levels -— Momentum, Inscription and RDesign. Initially available with D5 all-wheel-drive (AWD) or T6 AWD drivetrains and in Momentum or Inscription trim, the new Volvo S90 makes its South African debut towards the end of 2016. In 2017, D4 FWD and T5 FWD versions will become available.
Alfred has luck of the clover
TOP DRIVER UD Trucks Southern Africa has announced the brand’s top fleet driver at its annual Extra Mile Challenge driver competition. Alfred Ngilo, a driver from Clover in KwaZuluNatal, walked away with top honours, outperforming 20 other participants to be named the most efficient and productive driver after a day of evaluations and challenges at the Gerotek vehicle testing facility. Ngilo qualified to represent SA in the global Extra Mile Challenge competition in Japan in November.
Accelerating local production
TRADE SHOW The National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers of SA (Naacam) says industry and government will gather on a large scale at the Naacam Show in Durban in April 2017 to drive manufacturing growth in the sector. The show, to be held every two years on a rotational basis in the country’s manufacturing centres, aims to accelerate the extent of localisation and volumes of exported locally made components.
