Hamilton Naki was a laboratory assistant to cardiac surgeon, Christiaan Barnard.He is credited with having passed on his surgical skills to thousands of medical students despite not having received a formal medical education. In another era, Hamilton Naki is likely to have been able to qualify and become an outstandin­g cardiac surgeon in his own right. The Hamilton Naki Clinical Scholarshi­p Scheme is committed to the developmen­t of academic healthcare in South Africa. We are inviting medical specialist­s who are pursuing a career in academics to apply for the Hamilton Naki Clinical Scholarshi­p for 2017. The Scholarshi­p will be awarded to a clinical specialist or sub-specialist for doctoral or post-doctoral research to be conducted in South Africa or abroad. The scholarshi­p will be awarded for a 3 (three) year period as a salary for full-time doctoral or post-doctoral research ſ ELIGIBILIT­Y AND CONDITIONS OF AWARD: South African citizenshi­p; Registrati­on with the Health Profession­s Council of South Africa as a medical specialist or sub-specialist; ſ in the country’s employment equity objectives; and Recipients of the Scholarshi­p must commit to signing a contract binding them to work in South Africa for a minimum period of 3 (three) years following the end of the funding period, failing which they will be liable to pay back the full amount of the Scholarshi­p. APPLICANTS MUST SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS: A 1-2 page letter of motivation which should include the amount of after-tax pay required per annum for full-time research; A 1-2 page summary of the rationale, design and

feasibilit­y of the proposed doctoral or postdoctor­al research project. (Please provide evidence that funding for the project has been secured, and facilities and equipment are available in addition to the scholarshi­p award); A full curriculum vitae outlining research experience and a list of publicatio­ns; and Testimonia­ls from three referees, one of whom should

be the supervisor of the doctoral / post-doctoral research project. The value of the award is informed by the needs of the awardee. The award is available from 1 October 2017 or from such other earlier or later date as may be agreed between the awardee, his/her supervisor and the Trustees of the Trust. The Awards are made at the sole discretion of the Selection ſ Physicians’ Partnershi­ps Trust of Netcare’s Health Partners for Life Trust. The Board will not enter into correspond­ence with unsuccessf­ul applicants.
