Three Preller works on offer

• Mix of modern and contemporary paintings and sculpture to be auctioned by Aspire in Cape Town

Aspire Art Auctions brings an exciting mix of fine art to its upcoming show in Cape Town on March 25 at The Avenue, the V&A Waterfront.

Headlining the work on offer is a rare Alexis Preller intaglio work from 1970, Gold Angel (Arêté), exhibited on his very last show at the Goodman Gallery.

Among the highlights are two other significant works by Preller – The Dance, an expressionistic early work of dancing figures in an interior, and a midperiod work from 1956, Vase and Head in Profile, which prefigures many of the themes and styles of his later work.

The offering of these works, from the beginning, middle and end of the career of this revered modern South African artist, on the same sale is unique in the auction market and a major coup for Aspire.

Other significant works on auction include sculpture by Sydney Kumalo and Ezrom Legae, as well as contemporary work by sculptors Deborah Bell and Willem Boshoff.

The auction will offer highquality work by young Cape Town-based talent Athi-Patra Ruga. The work, Uzukile the Elder, was recently exhibited at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. One of the artists on the South African Pavilion at the recent Venice Biennale, Mohau Modisakeng, also has work on show. More established contemporary talents William Kentridge and Robert Hodgins also have work on auction.
