Tiger reopens Enterprise plant
Listed packaged goods company Tiger Brands
— owner of the Enterprise, Bokkie and Oros brands — says it has reopened its Enterprise Foods factory in Germiston, with another facility in Polokwane likely to reopen in November.
Listed packaged goods company Tiger Brands — owner of the Enterprise, Bokkie and Oros brands — said on Friday it had reopened its Enterprise Foods factory in Germiston, with another facility in Polokwane likely to reopen in November.
The reopening of the plant will see the return to the shelves of its ready-to-cook products such as bacon and sausages. In March health minister Aaron Motsoaledi announced there was a strain of listeria at Tiger Brands’ Polokwane processed meat factory.
Following the announcement, Tiger Brands recalled Enterprise ready-to-eat meat products and closed four meatprocessing facilities.
“This is the first step in bringing back our Enterprise products and we will be providing our consumers with assurance of product safety through our on-pack seven-step farm-totable quality check process,” Mary-Jane Morifi, Tiger Brands chief corporate affairs officer, said on Friday.
She said the quality check details were in addition to the industry safety standards for the production of ready-to-eat processed meats.
Morifi said the facility would resume production once refurbishments at Polokwane had been concluded and the necessary assessments completed by the health department.
“We anticipate this to occur in November. However, the Enterprise Foods meat-canning operation, which is a separate unit on the Polokwane site, recommenced production on September 12. A certificate of acceptability for this operation was issued by the Capricorn municipality on August 31,” she said. An announcement on the Pretoria facility would be made soon.
Morifi could not confirm the total costs associated with the refurbishment of plants but anticipated this would be between R50m and R70m.
