THE THIRD UMPIRE
Will the ANC secretarygeneral testify voluntarily before the Zondo inquiry into state capture? He has threatened in the past to do so, but now that the evidence against him is mounting, things have gone quiet. Yet that evidence continues to mount. A lump-sum payment in lieu of six months’ notice seems fantastically generous for someone who is accused of “serious violations of his financial, procurement and fiduciary responsibilities” involving billions, yet the Transnet CEO is intent on challenging his dismissal. Handing 70% of all Competition Commission work totalling R72m over three years to a single law firm run by a past employee doesn’t seem terribly, well, competitive. Yet the commissioner resents the issue even being raised.
