DIRTY MONEY SEASON 2 — NETFLIX

Alex Gibney’s documentary series about the evils of the corporate world continues with examinations of nefarious dealings at Wells Fargo, the lavish lifestyle of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, the slumlord practices of Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and the dirty and bloodied hands of the world gold mining industry.

GENTREFIED — NETFLIX

The troubles of gentrification affect people the world over, from Rosebank to Maboneng, Salt River to Brooklyn. Netflix’s comedy-drama series takes on issues of inequality arising from the gentrification process in the story of a Latino family fighting to keep their Los Angeles family taco shop alive despite threats by developers and hipsters.

EMERGENCE — SHOWMAX

ABC’s supernatural family drama has a lot of Lost and Stranger Things influences but it stands out thanks to an excellent performance from Fargo’s Allison Tolman as a small-town police chief whose life and that of her family are thrown upside down after the discovery of a mysterious girl who survives an unexplained plane crash.

MILES DAVIS: BIRTH OF THE COOL — NETFLIX

Part of PBS’s American Masters series, this archive-rich and legend-filled interviewee documentary explores the life and passions of jazz’s most consistently explorative and unique pioneer. For diehard fans it serves as a welcome reminder of Davis’ genius while providing plenty of insight into the trumpeter’s process for newcomers to his timeless work.

SPENSER CONFIDENTIAL — NETFLIX

Director Peter Berg reteams with actor Mark Wahlberg for this pedestrian action buddy adaptation of novelist Robert B Parker’s story of a disgraced former Boston police officer who comes out of prison and finds himself thrown straight back into fighting against the police corruption he went to jail for exposing.
