Anglo American’s 10th ‘green’ ship set to collect iron ore from Saldanha Bay
Diversified miner Anglo American announced on Wednesday that it took delivery of its 10th and final liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuelled bulk carrier.
The vessel, the Ubuntu Liberty, will sail from China to SA on its maiden voyage to collect iron ore from Saldanha Bay.
The 10 Capesize+ LNG dualfuelled bulk carriers that were built over three years would contribute to Anglo American minimising its environmental footprint, said Matt Walker CEO of the group’s marketing business. The vessels offered an estimated 35% reduction in emissions compared with ships powered by conventional marine oil fuel, the group said.

of sustainable shipping as part of a more sustainable supply chain that end consumers increasingly expect,” he said.
In 2022 the shipping industry was responsible for almost 3% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Anglo American has committed to achieving carbon neutrality across all of its operations by 2040 including its controlled ocean freight and the Ubuntu fleet is a key component.
The LNG dual-fuelled vessels offer an estimated 35% reduction in emissions compared to ships fuelled by conventional marine oil fuel, the group said.
According to the company, since the first vessel was loaded in early 2023, the Ubuntu fleet has successfully and safely moved 6.4-million tonnes of iron ore and steelmaking coal across global shipping routes.
