One and only Tina C for Cape Town

- TINA GEORGE

THEFIRST time Cape Town audiences got to see Tina C, pictured, was in 2005.

The nine-time Grammy-winning Music Artiste, Global Icon for Peace, and Independent Presidential Candidate 2012 can sing and write songs and most importantly is a firm believer in politics.

This is all a persona, of course, created by award-winning actor, comedian and musician Chris Green to entertain audiences across the globe.

The country and western globetrotting singer and mistress of satire will be performing as part of the FNB Variété Festival, which runs from Saturday to October 20.

The festival, a first of its kind, will showcase a range of international and local artists in and around the city centre.

Brought to the city by Eddy Cassar Public Relations, producers of the Vodacom Funny Festival, it uses unconventional theatre venues held in pop-up theatres from hotel lobbies, cafés, an oyster bar, a hotel restaurant to a conference venue. Some 65 performances will be presented in the city centre over two weeks.

The festival offers Capetonians an exciting opportunity of enjoying theatrical entertainment in intimate arenas. The first node is situated around the Cathedral and Taj Hotel at the top end of the St George’s Mall, with the award-winning production of Faulty Towers the Dining Experience scheduled for The Cape Sun Hotel.

Fresh from a sell-out season at the Sydney Opera House, Tina C promises to have you clutching your sides while at the same time making you think with its political satire.

“There’s a joke that she was Miss Tennessee when she was a teenager,” explains Green of the name Tina C, over a chat on the phone in London.

“The characters come about normally in what interests me.

“I write all the songs as I’m a musician primarily, so nearly all my characters will sing and perform,” he says.

“I love politics and I’m interested in people’s lives and how they take control of them.”

Green says that his SA show will be particularly tailored for the local audiences touching on our very own political content.

Tina C performs at Twankey Oyster and Champagne Bar at the Taj Hotel. Tickets R120 each. Book at Computicket.
