‘No probe’ into Hawks boss’s car accident

-

THE HAWKS said yesterday it was not investigating an accident involving its suspended Gauteng boss Shadrack Sibiya.

“That investigation is done by police, they deal with that,” said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

He said the Hawks were, however, looking into the matter of whether Sibiya needed assistance.

“We have requested the Gauteng office to look into the matter and find out if there is any assistance the general would require, irrespective of the issues which are happening now.

“We are bound to make sure we look after our members,” said Mulaudzi.

Sibiya was injured last Monday when the car he and his lawyer Victor Nkwashu were travelling in overturned and rolled.

Sibiya is fighting his suspension in court. He and suspended national Hawks head Anwa Dramat are accused of orchestrating the rendition of five Zimbabwean men in 2010.

The five, including Witness Ndeya, Gordon Dube and Pritchard Tshuma, were illegally repatriated to Zimbabwe by the Hawks. Proper extradition processes were not followed and Ndeya and Dube were killed, allegedly by Zimbabwean police.

In an initial report, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate found Dramat and Sibiya were directly involved in the renditions. A final report, compiled last March, indicates they were cleared on the basis of additional evidence.

The Hawks were reportedly investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving against Sibiya and also how he managed to afford his BMW X6.

Mulaudzi said the Hawks would not comment on the report. “We don’t want to even venture into that. We’re not involved in some sort of witch-hunt.” – Sapa
