Storms brew and Goodweather takes Strain…

- MUNYA VOMO

BEFOREwe get excited about The Strain returning, we should get more excited about how soon it came back. When TV shows end a season, it’s often a long wait until we get to see the following season. Before the strain started to show on the fans, however, tonight you can check out the first episode of the second season.

Just to recap: in the first season we had established that an evil creature was in New York and it appeared to be of vampirical origins. The creature is thought to have existed throughout the ages of mankind. Anyone who is bitten by it will get infected with the virus and become cannibalistic. It reads like something out of the Dracula rule book, but once you watch The Strain, it becomes apparent that this is a very different story.

Corey Stoll stars as the gifted Dr Ephraim Goodweather who makes it his personal mission to eradicate the monster vampire, The Master, believed to be the source of the horror in the Big Apple.

If The Master is killed, then all the infected will automatically be healed. However, killing a supernatural creature that is probably as old as the Earth is close to impossible, as we saw in the finale of the first season. That was a bit of an anti-climax, to be honest, but then if they had managed to kill The Master, they would have killed the series too.

So what is the second season about? Well, given that Goodweather and his team angered The Master, there is a lot of revenge coming their way. In this season, the hunter will now become the hunted and so the team that was after The Master are the primary target and we are bound to lose a few characters along the way.

Robert Maillet ( 300, Pacific Rim) plays The Master and it appears to be his best role yet. We also learn about the history behind The Master and his relations with others of his kind. He has hatched an ingenious plan to get back at Stoll, making you think that perhaps the fight was not a good idea in the first place.

We were not quite sure if co-creators Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan would manage to build on the success of the first season but by the look of things, they have managed to do so.
