Three arrested for Inanda cop slaying
KWAZULU-NATAL police told the family of the slain Inanda policeman that they had arrested three men in connection with the ambush killing.
On Tuesday, two Inanda police officers were overpowered and disarmed while in the Namibia informal settlement serving a protection order.
They were locked in the back of their police van and driven to another location where they were shot. One survived and is in hospital.
Before dawn on Wednesday, police arrested three men, aged between 18 and 26, in Mariannhill for the attack.
Yesterday, KZN commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, visited the family of the dead officer, Sergeant Vusimuzi Moyana, 39, in Ntuzuma.
The media and a police contingent were greeted by hymns from the mourning family.
Moyana is the father of three girls and two boys.
The injured policewoman Sergeant Jabu Jojisa is recovering in hospital.
Ngobeni congratulated police on the arrests. “While we are still in shock after the callous attack on our police officers, it is comforting to know that the perpetrators are behind bars. We hope that these arrests bring relief to the grieving families of our police officers,” she said.
Ngobeni also reminded criminals not to underestimate the resources police have at their disposal to make arrests and recover firearms.
The three alleged murder suspects were hiding in the Mpola area of Mariannhill when they were caught.
“Police recovered three firearms, including the two that were taken from the police officers. An AK-47 was also found.
“The police officers’ uniforms and cellphones were also found with the arrested men,” Ngobeni said.
They will appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court soon to face charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and kidnapping.
