FIVE people were killed on the Western Cape’s roads at the weekend, Western Cape traffic authorities said. Provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa said two cyclists were killed – one in Athlone and another near Dunoon. A male driver was also killed in a crash in Macassar and another man died in a head-on collision in Worcester. The other fatality occured in Hanover Park.

Elsewhere, it took a “co-ordinated effort” to stop a fast-moving blaze at Kempston Truck Hire Command in Paarden Eiland late on Saturday night, fire and rescue services said yesterday. Six trucks were destroyed by the fire, which was reported to fire and rescue services shortly after 11pm.

Western Cape fire and rescue spokesman Theo Layne said no one was injured in the inferno.

“The fire was reported at 11pm and we called the owners to come move the other trucks before they were damaged by the fire.”

Kempston Truck Hire declined to comment when the Cape Argus contacted them.

In a separate incident, passengers made a dramatic escape from a taxi that caught alight near Masiphumelele yesterday.

The driver pulled over when he saw smoke coming from the engine and the passengers all managed to escape without serious injuries before the taxi burst into flames.

The cause of the fire had not yet been determined.
