THE Western Cape’s brightest science and maths whizz kids have gone headto-head in mind-bending battles of wits and smarts.

It was a nail-biting finish as Curro Durbanville High School and Glenwood House in George finished as regional winners in the final round of the Nickelodeon Genius 2017 contest, that was held at The Royal Cape Yacht Club, last week.

There were four rounds and 19 teams participated, tackling a variety of challenges including maths quizzes and problem solving tasks.

Glenwood House pupil, Matthew van Helsdingen said: “I feel really amazed and excited. I cannot believe I won. Maths and science is awesome and it is cool how you can learn new things.”

Fellow pupil, Derrick Hill said: “It feels great. We were joking about winning all week. We never thought it could be a possibility.”

Curro Durbanville teacher Willine Harvett said: “I am very excited with the results. I never realised it was such a big competition. As a teacher, I am proud of them. They love maths and science. I am so glad that they were rewarded for their hard work.”

Shimei Ganesh, brand co-ordinator at Nickelodeon said: “Children have to complete a two-minute quiz online in order to enter the competition.

“It was a difficult, but fair test. There is a R50000 prize for the two regional winners.

“Cambridge University Press also gives out R10000 in books to both schools.”
