ONE PERSON died and 242 were injured when two Metrorail trains collided near Kaalfontei­n station in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni. ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said medical personnel found passengers climbing out of the wreckage when they arrived yesterday. ‘One person was killed and 242 injured yesterday afternoon after two passenger trains collided on the Tembisa line near Kaalfontei­n, east of Joburg,’ Meiring said. ‘ER24 paramedics, with numerous other services, arrived on the scene to find the two trains had collided head-on. Numerous occupants had already begun to climb out of the train and were scattered around the scene.’ The deceased was trapped in the train wreckage and was declared dead on the scene. Meiring said 242 patients were treated on the scene, then taken to nearby hospitals.
