A comedy show about the value of insurance

- MUNYA VOMO

MOST of us only think of insurance when it is too late. When we watch Desmond Dube or Mpho Pops do the insurance ads, we rarely take note. In fact those adverts usually come at an inconvenient time, while we’re watching our favourite show.

But we need to hear about insurance because it affects all of us. Coming to you as a solution is Week After Next, the e.tv comedy that features a few local comedians who subliminally school viewers about insurance in some seriously funny skits.

“The show is about insurance awareness done in a comedic way. We try to tell people the importance of insurance and set up situations that could affect them. Imagine you give your car to someone and they are not (an insured driver). If something were to happen to them or the car, insurance will give you problems,” said Thapelo “Tips Shampoo” Seemise.

His experience on the show is made memorable by the comedians that join him.

“We have several comedians on the show, including Roni Modimola, Celeste Ntuli and Ntosh Madlingozi, and I am the host in terms of bringing the conversation to the real information on insurance. So my role is to step in and be the voice of reason and give advice around the comedy,” he said.

“The show is hilarious. Before it was a series of infomercials and we did that for the first two seasons. Now we are doing full episodes for this show. We have shot six episodes and we want to shoot more,” he said.

But are they all insured before they start preaching to us?

“We are all insured on the show. My brain is the most expensive on the show, so we have that covered,” he joked.

For Seemise, the point is to instil the subject of insurance into young people’s hearts and minds as something that’s always been there and not a new phenomenon.

“Most of us in the locations have gold teeth that we did not pay for thanks to the medical aid cover that we have. So I am highlighting that in the show – that while growing up, our parents had some sort of medical aid and we have to have it now that we are grown up,” he said.

The other subject he is passionate about is insurance in the entertainment industry.

“I also liked the time we talked about artists and pension. The UIF. As an artist, you are constantly employed, so there is a need to put money away because you are not working for anyone. So we are giving solutions on how artists can save money that will help them during a lull,” said Seemise.

Week after Next airs on Fridays on etv at 5pm.
