Sharing a special blessed bond

- Venecia Slamet

MY HUSBAND and I will be celebrating our 20th anniversary on March 21. We met at high school and we have been together ever since.

However, life has its challenges. We have two beautiful children. Our son is 17 years old and our daughter is 14 years old.

Our daughter has been battling with uncontrolled seizures since she was born which resulted in her being profoundly disabled and mentally challenged.

Our lives consisted of hospital visits, therapy bills, doctor’s bills and medical expenses. Our marriage was tested. We struggled at times to bond as a couple as our daughter’s demands took priority.

We have had our fair share of sleepless nights and arguments, and one spouse is often left at home to care for her, while the other is out.

Through God’s Grace, we have made this relationship work for us. Our love for each other is strong and I thank my daughter for that. We have a partnership or a special bond that nobody would understand.

We have a daily routine that has become automatic in our home.

I often stand back and admire my husband in silence and I thank God that I am blessed with this awesome guy. A wink and smile from him across a busy lounge still makes my knees go weak.

We often don’t go out due to not having a suitable babysitter and she is too ill to leave in anyone’s care. My husband loves our daughter and he has always provided for her, as she must have the best care.

He will pay doctor’s bills, buy nappies and her special formula as she is tube fed. He will buy me expensive perfumes for my birthday and Christmas.

I am an educator and cannot compete with his standard of gifts. I would like to surprise my husband with this Valentine’s gift so that I can express my love and gratitude.

I hope by reading my story you will understand my need to spoil him.
