Sizzling movies for Valentine’s

- ALYSSIA BIRJALAL

THE month of love is here and the only way to avoid Valentine’s Day is if you’re single – but, if you’re not, here’s a line-up of romance movies that will keep you and your partner’s flame alive.

Throw in a box of her favourite chocolates and bouquet of flowers, and you are on your way to winning the “Best Boyfriend of the Year” award.

Here’s the list in no particular order: 1. Love Actually: Although it’s a movie about falling in love over the Christmas holiday, it’s still a romantic comedy, one that sees nine interconnected relationships blossom. It has a plotline for every moment in your relationship, from first crush to the grave, and the story covers all of the holiday season staples: the Christmas party, the school pageant and the holiday songs. In addition, the cast is great and the performances are solid. The characters are falling in love, falling out of love, some are with the right people, some are with the wrong people, some are looking to have an affair, while some are in a period of mourning; it’s a microcosm of reality. Love begins and love ends. They flirt a lot. The ultimate theme is love. 2. Titanic: The Story of Titanic has captured hearts and minds worldwide, arguably none more so than the love story between Jack and Rose. Despite being based on fictional characters, the 1997 classic is still listed as one of the greatest love stories of all time. We know how it ends and we are aware that we can’t change the ending – but how we wish we could. Hence, there are tears every time Jack Dawson floats down to the bottom of the ocean, along with our hearts. As Valentine’s Day approaches, grab your popcorn and get on board the “ship of dreams”. 3. 10 Things I Hate About You: Popular, pretty Bianca Stratford is in dilemma. A family rule forbids her from dating until her unpopular, rebellious, boy-hating older sister Kat gets a suitor of her own. In an attempt to win Bianca, a potential boyfriend desperately attempts to set Kat up with Patrick Verona, another rebel who may just be able to win Kat’s heart. This 1999 movie is still relatable and never fails to hit you right in the spot and – even if the plot doesn’t sound interesting to you – just watch this movie for Heath Ledger’s smile. You won’t regret it. 4. Pretty Woman: While it is best known as the movie that made Julia Roberts a star, this 1990 romcom is so much more than that. So what makes this modern fairytale about a prostitute rescued by a billionaire so special? Well, Roberts made us all love Vivian Ward, who’s funny, strong-minded yet kindhearted. Vivian also sells sex, but there’s one thing she won’t do: kiss on the mouth. That’s too intimate. Thankfully for the hopeless romantics out there, some rules are made to be broken. It happens when Vivian finally gives in to her feelings for Edward and kisses him tenderly on the lips while he’s asleep – then, out come our tissues. The soundtrack is also perfect. Good songs are used to brilliant effect. When you listen to Roy Orbison’s Oh, Pretty Woman and Roxette’s It Must Have Been Love, you’re immediately transported back to those scenes. 5. The Fault In Our Stars: Following a reallife story, Hazel and Gus are two extraordinary teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional and a love that sweeps them – and us – on an unforgettable journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous, given that they met and fell in love at a cancer support group. This movie will make you remember how good love can be. As the film draws to a close, you will find yourself making a promise to yourself that you will settle for nothing less than extraordinary, beautiful, life-changing, eternal love.
