Football board game scores

- Leletu Gxuluwe

BACK in 1968, then 17-year-old Robin Petersen who grew up as a soccer fanatic with his four brothers, created a rudimentary “world eleven” football board game.

The game has since grown to a fully fledged board game that can be played by three to four people.

“As a teenager, growing up with obviously more important matters on my mind, the game was neglected and dormant for many years,” said the now 66-year-old Petersen.

Fantasy Football Managers is a Monopoly-like game that has since been resuscitated and can be used as an educational and recreational football game. The simple rules are ideal for both old and young football fans. The rules deal with playing league and knockout matches, updating goal scorers and buying players.

The game was inspired by Petersen’s father who introduced him to the world of football.

“It was obvious that my concept in its original form had to undergo major reconstruction to be commercially viable. Therefore the innovation and success of combining an educational aspect with that of a recreational one seemed to be the solution.”

Petersen has introduced the game to a number of schools, receiving positive feedback with some schools saying the game has value and assists with numerical skills and is relevant.

Petersen said that the feedback received from schools, prisons, shopping malls and sport clubs helped him strengthen the game and include the necessary educational value.

Petersen is proud to have never let go of his dream stating that his father had told him: “Remember your dream will always only be a dream... if it is neither a failure nor a success.”
