EVERYONE from all over Cape Town could travel on the MyCiTi buses free yesterday, and many took advantage of the opportunity to take in the sights and sounds of the Mother City.

MyCiTi service covers 40 routes across the city, with 42 stations and more than 700 bus stops, Mayoral Committee Member for Transport and Urban Development, councillor Brett Herron said.

“This is a great opportunity for residents and tourists to get firsthand experience of how easy and convenient it is to use the MyCiTi service to go places around Cape Town”.

Carlyn Bouah, 34, from Mitchells Plain, said it was a chance to take a trip away from gangsterism and poverty.

“It’s nice because our children here are underprivileged. So we need to get them out of the place – usually we can’t get them anywhere besides being in Mitchells Plain.”

Charmaine Rakgwathe, 19, from Brooklyn, said the bus was overcrowded and uncomfortable, but appreciated the gesture.

“Yoh, it was horrific, I don’t want to lie to you. It is packed and it wasn’t a very pleasant experience. But it was nice, a nice gesture because you get to explore Cape Town.”

Mkhululi Mnguni, 27, who arrived from Joburg recently, said he was happy with the promptness of the service.

“In the morning the bus was not that full. We managed to get to where we were going in a faster time than expected.”

Rooyston Botha, 36, from Parklands uses the MyCiTi buses every day and said they were vital to get home safely.

“There’s no taxis, there’s no other buses going to where I stay. My only option is to take MyCiTi.” –
