ONE OF South Africa’s most beloved DIY bands, Make-Overs, are about to embark on their sixth South African tour, Hit the Ground Running. They will be spending the next few weeks playing at shows across the country.

The Make-Overs are a duo of red-headed musical malcontents who hail from the grey suburban wasteland of Kilner Park. Formed in mid 2010 with Martinique Pelser on drums and vocals and Andreas Schonselbt on guitar and vocals, the couple hit the South African scene with a frenzied live act that cut through you like a machete. With elements of rock, pop, punk and noise and an intense, energy-driven performance, the Make-Overs have something for everyone.

“There is no predetermined musical direction, but instead a mutual excitement in discovery and exploration. From frantic outbursts to gentle trance-inducing grooves, we are somewhat unpredictable,” said Pelser. The band has an unusual history. “We have been making music together in various DIY bands since 2003. In 2010, our current musical project, Sticky Antlers (which 1 Pry, amid controversy, into Egyptian construction (7) 2 Used as berries in an eatery (9) 3 Squeal on friend, on the quiet (10) 4 Discourse on Morse code with naval leader (6) 5 Respected English and Scottish heads came down in buckets (8) 6 Russki eventually captured ex-Soviet capital (4) 7 Bottle never broke (5) 8 Stream of water crystallised on high fliers (3,3) 13 Check veins and makes up one’s mind (10) 16 Play and see mishap corrected (9) 17 Sole upright by a short head (4,4) 18 Tempt some extremists to top Mussolini (6) 20 Poplar, and the parts thereabouts, each create dents (4,3) 21 Like Santa’s little helpers to be egotistical and topless! “Sticky Antlers taught us a lot. It was a lot of fun and influential in the South African underground scene at the time, but it was hard traveling and touring with four people. Andreas and I realised that if we wanted a band that could tour a lot more, a lot longer, make more records and be able to make a small amount of money go much further, it would be ideal if we went back to one of our earlier concepts – a two-piece.

“We decided to start from scratch with a new name and sound from our previous experiments. And so in August 2010 we played our first show as Make-Overs and our last show as Sticky Antlers,” Pelser said.

She said the nationwide tour was prompted because they wanted to show other local bands that it was possible to open up the local tour circuit.

“With the amazing helping hand we are getting from Concerts SA with the Music Mobility Fund we are able to make the tour much bigger, and include smaller towns that we would not have been able to include before. 1 Beholder (7) 2 Invasive, meddlesome (9) 3 Tried out for a part in a film (10) 4 String of prayer beads (6) 5 Ordinary soldiers (8) 6 Insects (4) 7 The Latin name for Troy (5) 8 Musical beat (6) 13 Flirtatious (10) 16 Prestigious American universities (3,6) 17 Guns (8) 18 Stimulate, energise (6) 20 Easing of tension between nations (7) 21 Church caretaker (6) 23 Beyond the ordinary (5) 25 Secure, unwavering (4) Down: - 1 Seersucker. 2 Umber. 3 Lollipops. 4 Heiress. 5 Bigoted. 6 Onset. 7 Soap opera. 8 Ruff. 12 Antifreeze. 14 Cupboards. 16 Sensitive. 18 Doorman. 19 Bungles. 21 Grade. 22 Vaunt. 23 Stew.

“We also want to show other bands that we can build a local tour circuit here… There are quite a few bands in South Africa who are bringing in bands from overseas to tour with them. We would love to do that in the future, and this tour will show us how viable an endeavour like that would be,” said Pelser.

The band has toured the US three times, as well as Reunion Island.

“We have been frequently noted locally and internationally as a must-see live band and I think a lot of South Africans will love our energetic set and be very surprised how much sound only two people can make. For those that are already fans of our music, we have incorporated a lot of new songs from the last three albums we have released, along with some old favourites,” she said.
