WESTERN CAPE Premier Helen Zille is officially a grandmother.

Zille, who has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons recently, shared the news of the arrival of her first granddaughter on Twitter.

Her good news, which she shared this week, attracted more than 1 000 likes and 66 retweets. She was also subjected to a backlash. @Raski_S asked “is she a product of colonialism?”. @SergioRamasika, asked: “Are you going to educate her about how great colonialism was for South Africa?” @Mdakabas said: “Please don’t teach her RACISM.”

“I am absolutely delighted that the birth went well, and that she is healthy. Her name is Mila, named after her grandmother (my mother) and her great grandmother (my granny),” Zille said.

Mila was born shortly after midnight on April 1, and weighed 3.35kg. The child is the first born of her eldest son Paul and his wife Gretl.

Zille’s future is currently in the balance after she made remarks about colonialism on Twitter that caused a frenzy among users. She faces a disciplinary hearing and charges that she violated the party’s federal constitution and brought the party into disrepute.

However it emerged this week that the disciplinary process could take several months to conclude because she is “extremely busy”.

Zille said that despite all the stress she was experiencing, she was fine. –
