Is Zuma losing his sight?

-

WHOSE glasses are you looking through, President Zuma? They can’t be yours, you’re not seeing straight.

You look at our dear Pravin Gordhan and you see a monster trying to destroy the South African economy.

Calling the finance minister back from overseas must have been a mistake. You couldn’t have been seeing clearly, Mr Zuma. You would never have wanted to humiliate Gordhan or be upset with him for rocking the Gupta boat.

Bathabile Dlamini appears in an angelic form, words whispered from her mouth ring true to you. You think she is doing the best she can for the people.

You don’t see those counting every cent – child-headed families, older siblings putting the younger ones through school, parents working day and night to give their children a chance in life, pensioners desperate for their monthly grants living from hand to mouth, those physically challenged – crying out for relief, searching for an opportunity to break out of a cycle of despair.

Your homestead, Nkandla, stretches across the land. Swimming pools appear as fire pools. You don’t hear the calls of the people who wish you would step down.

You weren’t even able to see public protector Thuli Mandonsela’s report on Nkandla.

And I’m sure you didn’t see the newspapers or the media coverage at Ahmed Kathrada’s funeral. You couldn’t have heard what Kgalema Motlanthe said.

Shame, you are missing out on so much – what with being requested not to attend the funeral by Kathrada’s family.

I wonder if you didn’t make an Oscar booboo on the reshuffle of cabinet ministers. Perhaps someone handed you the wrong list?

Or those ministers who were shoved out should be the ones who were supposed to be given special accolades?

On the other hand, maybe it was the right list, after all – those ministers who have been chosen will reinforce your sense of well-being with their soothing sycophant moves and ensuring that the Treasury will be so much more visible.

You really should change those glasses. Try the range that is not rose-tinted. But I wonder if your eyesight will improve. Your decisions have caused so much grief. Your vision is blurred by the thought of your oncoming retirement, with the only thing standing out being the colour of the rand.

But perhaps the colour is also fading with the S&P junk status rating.

How much longer can you afford to be so short-sighted?

Only time will tell. SHAHEDA BASSIER Woodstock
