RESIDENTS in Goodwood are fuming after discovering that the empty land which stretches over Wiener, Paarl and De Villiers streets is going under the hammer.

A board advertised the plot would be going on auction on April 19. The community had vehemently objected to the City’s decision to auction off the vacant plot sighting reasons that it could potentially lead to overcrowding and crime.

The open field is located in the middle of the residential area of Wiener Street and De Villiers Street. The community said that the space is mostly utilised for outdoor activities, social gatherings and outdoor clubs. However, residents say their grievances have continued to fall on deaf ears. “This plot allows us to do various activities, it’s safe for our kids and the community makes use of it.” Zureena Sedick, a resident said.

The plot has been vacant for 20 years and the initial sale of the property happened two years ago.

“Our ward councillor has not been present at any of our meetings. She always just send her PA,” Sedick said.

Another resident, Salie Behardien, said that councillors are not considering the needs of the community. He said the sale will have a huge impact on crime in the area. The community said they have had a few meetings with the councillors explaining their plight; however councillors have not responded adequately. Ward councillor Franchesca Walker said she was aware of the issues raised regarding the sale of the property.

The property is being auctioned off by ClareMart Auction Group. It will be going under the hammer in eight days’ time.
