Suspects hauled in for big crayfish catch

CRAYFISH with a street value of about R100 000 were seized from two suspects aged 23 and 34 in Faure Marine Drive, Gordon’s Bay, after they were found with crayfish tails and whole crayfish.

Police spokespers­on FC van Wyk said: “Members of the K9 unit acted on informatio­n that crayfish were being transporte­d to Cape Town. They pulled over a suspicious vehicle in Faure Marine Drive, Gordon’s Bay, and searched the vehicle. They found plastic bags containing 3 015 crayfish tails and 60 whole crayfish. The two suspects, were arrested for possession and transporta­tion of crayfish in contravent­ion of Marine Coastal Management regulation­s.

“They will appear in Strand Magistrate’s Court today.

Police also arrested three male suspects aged between 23 and 34 for car hijacking and two robberies in two separate incidents in Mitchells Plain.

On Friday, police officers responded to a business robbery in Town Centre, Mitchells Plain, where two men had entered the business premises armed with a knife and an iron pipe. They made off with two laptops, an undisclose­d amount of cash, a cellphone and a minibus. Police patrolling the area spotted the minibus and arrested the two suspects, aged 24 and 37, on charges of business robbery.

The stolen property and the vehicle were recovered.

The suspects are due to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court today, said Van Wyk.

Meanwhile, also in Mitchells Plain, the Flash (firearms, liquor and second-hand goods) unit members arrested two suspects in liquor and second-hand goods operations. Both will appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court today.

The illegal trade of second hand goods is high on the agenda of SAPS in the Western Cape in their quest to reduce crime.
