Boy, 9, wins karting contest
REZA LEVY lived up to his family name as he won the second round of the South African National Karting championships that was held at blustery Killarney Kart Circuit this past long weekend.
Following in the footsteps of his grandfather the legendary Armien Levy, and his dad Ebrahim Levy, the nine-year-old participated in the Micromax category and managed to secure pole position in qualifying. The race day consisted of three heats, and he took the win in the final heat of the day. This was Reza’s first national race victory.
The pupil from Bishop’s Preparatory in Rondebosch is currently lying second in the overall championship with two rounds to go to Durban in July and later in Pretoria.
The South African National Karting Championships has four rounds, the first round was held on March 20 in Vereeniging which had an increase of 25% in participants compared to last year. This was round two of the Rotax Max Challenge which received over 100 entries.
Proud father Ebrahim Levy who is currently racing on the main circuit said his son fell in love with the sport because he was born into the racing family.
“He started racing three years ago and before the South African National Karting championships he won at the regionals. As a family we are overjoyed with the results as there were many hours spent practising and ensuring that the kart set-up was correct. As a father this was overwhelming as I saw that winning boosted his confidence.”
He said he would advise every parent to support their children’s dreams and show them how to set goals and achieve them. He also said he was thankful to Amazon Monsta Pop, and Sweet Xpress company for sponsoring them as it is an expensive sport.
