Double life a tangled web of trouble

- HELEN HERIMBI

THE third season of Power premiered on Vuzu AMP on Monday. In that first episode of the season, fans of the gritty drama were left with one question: where in the world is Kanan?

Let’s backtrack. So, Power follows the life of the protagonist, James “Ghost” St Patrick, who is played by the very hot but very short Omari Hardwick. Ghost is the kind of guy you root for. A drug dealer who makes his fortune and then attempts to go straight. He’s like Jay Z – the short version.

But, of course, it’s difficult to leave the street life behind, concentrate on his night club business and live happily ever after with his mistress. It’s complicated. His best friend Tommy (played by Joseph Sikora) doesn’t want to go legit. His wife, Tasha (the excellent Naturi Naughton) only knows the streets.

And his mistress, the assistant US attorney agent Angela Valdes (Lela Loren), is more flaky than the chocolate. While doing business with a dodgy kingpin called Felipe Lobos, things go so left that Ghost is convinced that the only way he can go legit is if he cuts all ties.

But the feds are on to Lobos and if he goes down, then Ghost’s cover will be blown. It also doesn’t help that Ghost’s arch nemesis, Kanan (played by the show’s producer, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson) is baying for his blood.

So by the time we get to the third season, Kanan and Ghost have had a face-off that sees our hero, Ghost, finally get rid of Kanan for good. Ghost lights a match and leaves Kanan in a warehouse to burn. But before he can live in a blaze of glory, Ghost discovers that Kanan might not have actually died in that warehouse.

So Ghost now has a chamber full of problems and not a weapon to release them. If 50 Cent can – in the year of our North God 2017 – troll Ja Rule about the dismally failed Fyre Festival, then imagine what his alter ego can do?

More importantly, can you imagine how epic the showdown between Tasha and Angela is going to be when they finally come to blows this season?

And now that Tommy and Ghost are officially no longer friends, does that make them enemies? We know both don’t let their enemies live long.

Reviews for the third season of this popular drama have not been as great as at the show’s inception, but you’ll have to watch to see if Ghost finally turns into Casper.

Power season 3 airs every Monday on Vuzu Amp (DStv Channel 103) at 9.30pm.
