Get Out the popcorn for a Devine night in

MTV has switched things up and included television in its annual awards. The MTV Movie and TV Awards air tonight, writes Helen Herimbi

IN 2017, the way we consume audiovisual media is way different from even 10 years ago. These days, watching a film is no longer a special excursion that requires you to get up, get dressed and go out to buy a ticket for the cinema.

Shoot, these days – with Netflix, Showmax, other streaming sites and even DVDs – you don’t even need to shower to watch a film. It’s become just like watching regular television.

And when it comes to the quality of TV shows, that too has sky-rocketed. The bar is set so high that sometimes the TV shows are better than the movies. This is why it makes so much sense for the MTV Movie Awards to revamp their image to include television.

The new MTV Movie and TV Awards aired live on MTV in the wee hours of this morning. They will air again at 9pm on both DStv’s MTV as well as MTV Base.

By now, you may know who the winners in the respective categories are. Or maybe, like us, you were smart enough to mute any spoilers and keywords on social media so you could watch tonight and have a new experience altogether.

The awards are hosted by funnyman Adam Devine. Performances include Big Sean, Noah Cyrus and Pitbull. The

Fast and Furious franchise will be honoured with the MTV Generation Award. And as nice as those elements are – they are indeed needed to keep an awards ceremony interesting – they don’t overshadow the nominees.

Get Out, the horror film about a white community that kidnaps young, gifted black men to steal their brains has been nominated a whopping seven times.

Deservedly so. It has the most nominations of any film or television show.

The most nominated TV show was Stranger Things with four nominations. It’s a series that is set in the 1980s and follows the search for a boy who has gone missing. His friends, mother and even the police chief start to believe supernatural activity may be involved – and so the series unfolds. If you have time to kill before 9pm, I would suggest you go and look up both Get Out and Stranger Things if you haven’t yet seen them.

Just so you can decide for yourself if they live up to the hype. Honourable mentions from this writer include the cinematography to be envied in the Moonlight film as well as the absolutely amazing This Is Us TV series. The latter is literally the best series I have seen this year and deserves all the accolades heaped upon it.
