TWO SUSPECTED robbers who fled a crime scene died when their getaway vehicle collided with a truck. The accident caused a diesel spill on Robert Sobukwe Drive, resulting in traffic delays in morning rush hour.

The pair’s alleged criminal act started in Wellington Road, Durbanville. Police noticed a suspicious vehicle parked in the road, according to police spokesperson Andre Traut.

He said when the police approached the car to investigate they spotted two men fleeing a liquor store.

“The driver of the Yaris made an attempt to knock the police members, who were on foot at that stage, over and sped off.

“One of the suspects who fled the scene of a burglary at the liquor store was arrested and detained, while the other one managed to evade an arrest,” said Traut.

A security guard, who had escaped from the scene, collapsed and died at the Durbanville police station while attempting to report the crime, Traut said.

ER24 spokesperson Werna Vermaak: “Shortly before 5am, paramedics from ER24, Metro Ambulance Services and Metro Rescue arrived on the scene where they found an articulated truck and light motor vehicle that collided with each other.

“A man was found trapped inside the light motor vehicle and another outside of it. The occupant found outside the vehicle showed no signs of life and was declared dead.

“The other was rescued by Metro Rescue and Fire Department. He later succumbed to his injuries,” said Vermaak.

The truck driver was not injured, he said.
