THE CAPE Argus Food Lover’s Market High School Quiz is heating up, with the competitors having to dig deep during Monday’s contest.

The annual school quiz started last Monday with 92 teams from various schools in Cape Town competing. This week, those teams that progressed past the first round had to really know their stuff.

The competition encourages high school pupils to test their knowledge of news and current affairs reported on in the Cape Argus newspaper.

The Cape Argus Food Lover’s Market High School quiz has become one of the most competitive school competitions in the Western Cape, with more than 140 teams entering last year. The top prize went to South Peninsula High.

Niresh Mangaru, director of Food Lover’s Market, said that he sees the event as an opportunity to help educate future leaders.

“We want to empower the leaders of tomorrow and we want to ensure the kids of today are trained to take over the leadership.

“We want to ensure their growth and allow them to prosper,” Mangaru said. “It’s exciting, and I’m one of the directors and involved in the entire operation.

“We want to make sure they not only learn, but practise what they learn – allow them to broaden their general knowledge.”

The first of the round-robin stages will finish on May 29. Youngsters are competing for a share of R200 000 in cash prizes, and there are various other rewards up for grabs.
